Intro to Coding with Drones

Drones are not only a fun and engaging tool, but their applications in STEM education are proving to be extensive. Our curriculum can be applied with varying age ranges and is extremely conducive to students with diverse learning styles by helping them explore math, science, and logic through fun and practical application. Students will learn Block, Python, and JavaScript coding by executing their code on small indoor friendly Tello drones that will fly autonomously.

Tello Drones

This incredibly small drone fits in your palm and only weighs approximately 80g. However, its durable design and flight technologies ensure that you can always fly with confidence. Just grab it from your bag and have fun.

Curriculum

  • Live or cloud-based lessons and videos

  • DroneBlocks lessons are aligned to include universal education standards, including CCSS, NCTM, TEKS, NGSS, and ISTE

  • True STEM/STEAM applications across all subjects

Intro to Javascript Coding

Javascript is the most popular coding language in the world, present on over 90% of all computers and over 3 billion devices.  It is the native language of web browsers and it is a great language to get started on for students who are interested in:

 

  • Mobile apps

  • Desktop apps

  • Web apps

  • Web servers and application servers

  • Games

  • Database connection

  • And much, much more!

 

In this fun and interactive course students will learn the basics of front and back end coding.  By the end of this course students will have coded a website of their own.

 

The full course consists of 25, two-hour modules, for a total of 50 hours of instruction.  It can be customized for your program to be as short as 20 hours.

 

This class has been offered by TRIO programs as a credit bearing course, and can include a midterm and final exam if desired depending upon your institution's requirements.

 

Requirements:

  • Students will need a desktop or laptop computer with at least 4GB of available internal memory.  

  • If they are using Chromebooks, they will need a USB flash drive with 4GB of memory available to save their work.

  • Students will also need permission to download software from the internet, as we will have them downloading some free programming tools.

Intro to Data Science

Data science is one of the most in demand modern career fields.  Why, you may ask? What is data science? Simply put, it is finding valuable insights and information from data.  Businesses use it to improve production. Hospitals use it to provide better care and save lives. It can drive innovation. Improve hiring. Redirect education. It is the backbone of artificial intelligence. The uses are endless!  

 

We make this course fun by introducing data sets that students are interested in: sports, video games. . . maybe even coronavirus.  By connecting data science to topics that students are passionate about, we engage them in meaningful conversations that make the numbers come alive.

 

In this course students will be introduced to Python, a powerful web developing language widely used in data science.

 

The full course consists of 10, two-hour modules.  It can be customized to your program’s needs.

 

Students complete this introductory course excited about pursuing careers in data science!
